Ralph W. McBane

Ralph W. McBane, 95 of Bergholz passed away Sept. 7, 2009, following a five-week illness. Ralph was a life long resident of Bergholz, having returned to his hometown after graduating from Mt. Union College where he participated in football, basketball, track, and served as president ATO Fraternity.

In 1935, he entered the insurance business and joined his late father, James McBane. The business grew into what is known today as McBane Insurance and Financial Services, Inc. Ralph's business career also included banking. For many years he served as an active director of the Bergholz State Bank and Citizens Banking Company of Salineville which in 1972 became Citizens Bankshares, Inc.

After retiring from the insurance business in his late 70's, Ralph went to Purdue University enrolling in a short course on raising hybrid, fast growing, hardwood timber trees. At present the tree farm consists of approximately 14,000 fast growing timber trees.

Ralph was a committed Christian with a servant's heart. He lived out his faith by serving God faithfully as an Elder, Trustee and Sunday school teacher at Trinity United Presbyterian Church. He was involved in many community activities. One of the most significant being the 1997 founding of the Bergholz Community Foundation, a non profit charitable organization providing scholarships, community improvements, and meeting special needs of citizens of Bergholz and the surrounding area.

Shortly after the foundation was formed a surprise dinner and program was held to honor Ralph for the many years of community service. This "Hats Off to Ralph" event also served as a kickoff fundraiser for the Bergholz Community Foundation. That special evening a check was presented to the foundation in the amount of $207,451. Ralph could not have been more pleased. Since that time the foundation has grown in assets and gives away an average of $75,000 each year in scholarships, community improvements, and other special needs.

Ralph was born in Bergholz, Nov. 29, 1913, the son of the late James and Corda Walter McBane. He married the late Maxine McLain McBane Nov. 27, 1935. He is survived by a son, James C. McBane and wife Eleanor of Bergholz; six grandchildren, Amy Richards and husband Gary and David McBane and wife Jenny both of Bergholz, Christine Pasiuk and husband Kenneth of Carrollton, Joy Roy and husband Ryan of Dillsburg, PA, Gabrielle McBane of Pittsburgh, PA, Daniel McBane of Steubenville and eleven great-grandchildren.
