H. Jay Rutledge
H. Jay Rutledge, 88, of Carrollton died Saturday, May 30, 2009, in Carroll Healthcare Center in Carrollton.
Born Jan. 22, 1921, in Lee Township, Carroll County, he was a son of the late Robert R. and Mearle Maple Rutledge.
During his life he was a devoted Christian servant. He was a member of the Canton Labor Union. During World War II, he served in the Navy. In November of 2002, he was given the honor of placing the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Mary Bake; two sons, William Rutledge of Florida and Steven Rutledge of Ohio; a daughter, Patsy Ray of Carrollton; nine grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and a sister, Lois Ahlquist of Canton.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Bake.
Funeral services were held June 2 in Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton with Rev. Tom Maley officiating. Burial was in Harlem Springs Cemetery with full military honors provided by the VFW, DAV and American Legion. In lieu of flowers the family wishes to have donations made to the Pete Ray Scholarship Fund, 63 Second St., Carrollton, 44615.
