Merle A. Coe

Merle A. Coe, 95, of Tipp City and formerly of Carrollton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at Hearth and Home of Vandalia.

Born in Wheeling, WV, he was a son of the late Merle and Emma (Korner) Coe.  He is also preceded in death by his wife, Loris (Grimm) Coe, whom he married Aug. 31, 1939, and who passed away July 16, 2005.

He served in the US Navy during WWII and then during the Korean War in the Naval Reserves.  He was commanding officer of a landing ship tank in both tours.

He retired in 1982 from the Carrollton School System where he taught math and science.  He was a Carrollton Post Office rural carrier for 28 years and was a Boy Scout leader for 20 years.  He was Protestant by faith.

He held memberships in Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, retired teachers associations, Carroll County Historical Society and National Woodcarvers Association.

He is survived by two sons, Merle Coe of Washington, DC, and Arthur Coe and wife Lenor of Clinton, WI; two daughters, Lorle Jost and husband Ernest of Camden, TN and Elizabeth Ball and husband Robert, of Tipp City; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held for Mr. Coe at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Acclaim Hospice, 7887 Washington Village Dr., Dayton, 45459.
