Jean M. Smiley

Jean M. Smiley, 87, of Chester, WV, formerly of Mechanicstown, died Saturday morning May 22, 2010, in The Stonepear Pavilion at Chester following an extended illness.

Born Jan. 10, 1923, in East Liverpool, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Kathryn Clements Dray.

She was a graduate of East Liverpool High School class of 1940.  Following graduation she worked at the East Liverpool Review, from there she worked for Dr. Albert Michael and the lab at East Liverpool Hospital.  She met and married her husband, John G. Smiley in May of 1948 and moved to Mechanicstown where John worked at Guess Manufacturing Company and Jean worked at the former Carlton Ware Company in Carrollton.  She retired in 1981 after 19 years of service as a secretary with the Carrollton School system.

She was a member of Corinth Presbyterian Church, having served as an Elder and choir member and Presbyterian Women's Association, both locally and nationally.  She was a member of Great Divide Ruritan Club, Carroll County Genealogical Society, Carroll County Historical Society and Carroll County Republican Women.  She was a volunteer for Hospice and wrote the Mechanicstown news section for The Free Press Standard.

She is survived by two grandsons, Jared and Jesse Smiley; a brother, Charles B. Dray of East Liverpool; and three sisters, Mary Wilson of East Liverpool, Pauline Childs of Louisville and Barbara McNutt of North Canton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Smiley; her son, John T. Smiley; three brothers, Homer W. Dray, Elmer L. Dray and Robert C. Dray and a sister, Martha Carpenter.

Jean requested no visitation hours.  She will be interred at Mechanicstown Cemetery with a memorial service to follow May 26 at 11 a.m. in Corinth Presbyterian Church.  Services were under the care and guidance of Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton.
