Joe Rubis

Joe Rubis, 90, of Amsterdam passed away Feb. 14, 2011, in Hennis Care Center of Dover.

Born Sept. 22, 1920, in Wolf Run, he was a son of the late Meri Kasinec.

He was employed at Wolf Run Mine from 1942-1948.  He entered the US Navy in 1958 serving on the USS Randolph and acquired the rank of AMMCi/c.  He later worked at Cadiz Portal for two years and Nelms Mine, retiring in 1980.  He was a member of the United Mine Workers and American Legion.

His hobbies were arrowhead hunting and gardening, sharing the produce with his friends.  He was especially proud of his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, the former Mary E. McLaughlin, whom he married Oct. 18, 1947; two children, Judy Jesse Newburn of Dover and Jim Rubis of Springboro, PA; three grandchildren, Jason Van and wife Jennifer, Dr. Erin Nicole Newburn and Dr. Andrew Dwight Newburn and wife Deirdre; a great granddaughter, Audrey Trace Newburn; a brother, Charles; and a sister, Julie Hall of Apache Junction, AZ.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 17 at Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Pastor Thomas Chain officiating.  Burial will follow in Ft. Steuben Burial Estates in Wintersville.  Visitation will be Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.
