Phillip Darr Birney

Phillip Darr BirneyPhillip Darr Birney age 42, of Jewett went to be with his Lord Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012.

Born April 19, 1969, in Dennison, Phillip was the beloved son of John P. and Audrey (Bolitho) Birney of Jewett.

A lifelong resident of Harrison County, he graduated from Jewett-Scio High School in 1987, and received an associate's degree in Beef Management from The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute. He worked for Tuscarawas Landmark, Wallace Fencing in Jewett, and then he and Ray Marker founded Blue Ridge Fencing.  He worked for Valley Mining for almost 15 years where he was a reclamation foreman. He worked all of his life with his family at C.H. Birney Farms where he helped manage the farm herd and his own herd. He had the ability to visualize structural designs and used this skill to help design and construct the main barn on the farm in 2006.

Phillip was a member of the Ohio Cattleman Association, Harrison County Farm Bureau, New Rumley 4-H Club and was a 4-H Key Leader. He attended Ohio Cattleman's Best shows across the state and open shows with his children. He served as a livestock judge for cattle shows at county fairs over the past two years. He loved working with youth and sharing his knowledge on feeding, grooming and breeding cattle. He enjoyed hunting and occasionally took part in antique tractor pulls. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, especially his three children.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Sherri L. Mercer Birney; children, Malania, Thomas John "TJ" and Mallory; a sister, Lin (David) Hamric of Coshocton; a brother, Stephen "Steve" (Missy) Birney of Jewett; nephews and nieces, Joshua, Joel and Elisha Hamric of Coshocton and Carly (boyfriend Kyle Carter) and Stephanie Birney of Jewett; father and mother-in-law, Ed and Gloria Mercer of Richmond; aunts, Doris Ann (Jack) Burton of Jewett, Joyce Richards (Lenny Copeland) of Scio, Delores (William) Ross, Carol DeWalt, Janet (Ralph) McAfee, Norma (John) Cagot, and Kay (Keith) Eddy, all of Jewett, and John and Karen Bolitho of Scio; an uncle, Carl R. Bolitho, Jr. of Uhrichsville; special cousins and friends, Jeff (Brandi), Tanya, Jeff (Denise), Misti (Bill), Blaine (Bonnie) and numerous other cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carl R. and Mildred Bolitho and Carl H. and Doris Birney; aunts and uncles, Ellen and Jim Ross, Martha and Nelson Boone, Virginia and Arthur Bailey, Bob DeWalt, Jane Coffield, Mary Bolitho, Pam Bolitho and Tom and Carl Birney.

Services will be held Friday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. in Koch Funeral Home, Scio with Pastor Roger Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Gardens, Jewett. Friends may call Wednesday from 7- 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Citizens Bank of Jewett where a scholarship fund has been established for his children.
