Agnes D. Carrothers

Agnes D. Carrothers, age 81, of 120 N. Union Street, Leesville, died suddenly in her home Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010. Born Jan. 28, 1929, in Bellaire, she was the daughter of the late Bruzelia G. and Genevieve Marie Black Jaquay.

She worked as a janitor for the former Leesville Grade School and as a part-time clerk for the Leesville Post Office.  She was an active and faithful member of Leesville United Methodist Church and many of her daily routines revolved around activities of the church.  Also active in her community, she served many years as a member of Leesville Village Council.

She took great pleasure and pride in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sporting events at Conotton Valley. Agnes was the last of a group of Leesville area women who lovingly became known as the "Leesville Mafia".  She is survived by a son, Terrence E. (Debbie) Carrothers of Bowerston; a daughter, Carol Marthaler of Neffs; four grandchildren, Quentin E. (Amanda) Carrothers of Bowerston, Mrs. Robert (Annette R.) Siminski of Clarkston, MI, and Mrs. Jeff (Tracy) Finney and Chad (Stacie) Smalley, both of Neffs; 11 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Tyler, Allison, Keaton, Madisen, Joshua, Cody, Peyton, Daniel, Zackry, and Shane; one great-great-grandchild Journey; three sisters, Mary Willis of Bridgeport, Elenor Orum of Radcliff, KY, and Jean Orum of Wheeling, WV, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Chester Carrothers, whom she married Jan. 15, 1947, and who died Oct. 8, 1980; three sisters, Betty and Helen Jaquay and an unnamed infant.   In accordance with Agnes' wishes, no calling hours will be held but a private family visitation will be observed.

A public graveside service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14 in Leesville Cemetery with Rev. Jerralyn Myers officiating. The Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville handled arrangements. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Leesville United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Alice Tope, Treasurer, 1305 Melrose Circle N.E., Bolivar, 44612.
