Joseph Lloyd Weir
Joseph Lloyd Weir, 66, of Minerva. passed away Friday, December 18th, 2009 at his home.
Joe was born in Canton, OH on June 29, 1943, the son of the late Samuel L and Irene V Weir.
Joe attended Mount Union College in Alliance. He worked for several years for the 3M Company in Canton and Akron. He owned and operated Squires Little Forrest Inn in Malvern and currently owns Electronic Service in Minerva.
His lifelong passion with horses came at a young age when Joe began showing Shetland ponies for Squires Acres. He established Squires Stables, a Thoroughbred racing farm and has produced numerous Stakes winners and years of pleasure. One of his proudest moments in horse racing came in 1995 when Light's Question won the Best of Ohio for juvenile fillies. This win brought him some winnings and his wife Carole. His most recent win came on November 21, 2009 at the Bobbie Bricker Memorial Handicap where his horse Gathering Dreams and Sarasponda won first and third respectively.
He was a member of Atwood Yacht Club, on the Board of Directors of the HBPA since 1997, a former Director of Steel Valley Bank in St. Clairsville, Ohio and a member of the Bulldog Investment Group also if St. Clairsville.
Joe is survived by his wife, Carole (Mease) Weir; a sister, Denise (Mike) Madden of Bedford, OH; two brothers, Kenny (Karen) Dorsey of Northfield, OH, Tim (Carole) Dorsey of Stow; a step daughter, Deborah Kay (Jim) Blind of Wadsworth, OH; a step son, Bradley Thomas (Lori) Patton of Minerva; sister-in-law Janet Witherspoon, brothers-in-law John Mease, Jr. and the late Bill Mease (Cindy); uncle John Howard (Ruth) Weir, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
He is also survived by grandchildren Bradley Patton, Jr. of Shreveport, LA, Brittany, Jessica, Brianna, and Sarah Patton all of Minerva, Graham Blind of Wadsworth, and three great grandchildren
He is preceded in death by his brother Dennis Dorsey, his biological parents Ida and Lee Dorsey, and his brother-in-law Bill Mease.
Funeral Services will be held at The First Presbyterian Church, Minerva, at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 with Rev. Barbara Bartholomew and Rev. Virginia Birks officiating. Calling hours will be held Monday 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Bartley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
