Bernice Reid McClester

Bernice Reid McClester, 93, of Mechanicstown, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at home, Kenwood Farms.

Born May 3, 1916, she was a daughter to the late John D. and Blanche Andrews Reid. She married Robert Samuel McClester on New Years Day, 1940.

She was a graduate of Carrollton High School, The Ohio State University in 1938 and earned a master’s degree from Kent State University in 1965. She taught Home Economics at Centralia High School from 1938 to 1939 and at Minerva High School from 1960 until her retirement.

She was a member of Herrington Bethel United Methodist Church. She and Robert went on 13 work crusades around the world with World Gospel Mission and shared their travel experiences through many talks and slide shows.

 Bernice was active in many local activities. She was a member of Carroll County Retired Teacher Association, serving in several capacities. She was active with Carroll County and Ohio Genealogical Societies. She co-authored five Carroll County Cemetery Books and was a Member of “First Families of Ohio.”   She was a past officer of the Carroll County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, a member of The American and Ohio Home Economics Associations, a lifetime member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

She and Robert hosted the Country Living Field Day and Ag Expo at Kenwood Farms beginning in 1994. They were also the first in the state of Ohio to donate development rights of their farm to Ohio in 2000. They were known for their love of Ohio State Football.

She is survived by a daughter, Jean Swartz of Shelby, Ohio; sons, John R. (Betty) McClester of Erie, PA, R. Scott (Linda) McClester of Florham Park, NJ, J. Neil (Laurie) McClester of Lisbon; grandchildren, Robert, Matthew, Michael, Mallory, Jacquelin, and Timothy McClester, Lisa Kruszweicz and Robert Bogniord; great-grandchildren, Megan, Samuel, Tim, Alyssa, Joshua, Rachel and Rosetta, Rachel and Michael; great-great-grandchildren: Trevor, Logan and Conner and sisters, Elnora (John) Ocel and Sara Manfull.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 65 Years, Robert S. McClester; a sister and two brothers-in-law Martha and Edgar Snode and Bud Manfull and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy and Emerson Wallace.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 3, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Herrington Bethel United Methodist Church. Bernice requested that her body be donated to The Ohio State University for research. In lieu of flowers friends may make memorials to Herrington-Bethel United Methodist Church or their favorite charity.  Friends unable to attend may register online at www.bartleyfuneralhome.com.
