Ruth L. Oakes, age 86, a resident of Carrollton, died late Saturday night, June 4, 2011, in Carroll Healthcare Center at Carrollton.

Born Dec. 13, 1924, in Canton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rhoda Miller Reed.

Primarily a homemaker for most of her life, Ruth filled her spare time with her creative hobbies of crocheting and knitting.  Her family was always her primary focus.  She was a member of Carrollton Church of the Nazarene.

She is survived by two sons David (Marge) Oakes of Carrollton and Frank Oakes of Canal Fulton; a sister, Carrie Winkler of Charlotte, NC: three grandchildren, Matt (Diane) Oakes of Canal Fulton, Mike (Sara) Oakes of Marlington, and Mrs. Mick (Melissa) Hostetler of Canton, and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald Oakes, who died in 1969; a sister and a stepbrother.

To conform according to Ruth's wishes, she has been cremated and there are no calling hours scheduled. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 19 in Carrollton Church of the Nazarene, 274 Fifth St., N.W., Carrollton with Pastor John Leaf officiating.  The Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville is handling arrangements.  The family requests that those with intentions to send flowers or other gifts to use those funds to "Pay It Forward" and assist someone less fortunate as a graceful gesture of charity in Ruth's memory.  To leave an online condolence message, visit www.baxtergardner.com.
