Bernice L. Coffy

Bernice L. CoffyBernice L. Coffy, age 85, a longtime Union Street, Leesville resident, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 2, 2009, in Sunnyslope Rehabilitation Center at Bowerston after a period of declining health.

Born April 17, 1924, in Barrs Mill, Tuscarawas Co., she was the daughter of the late Elmer Benjamin and Mary Flinner Bitikofer.
 
She was a retired employee of the flatware department of the former Scio Pottery Company with more than 25 years service.  She was an active and faithful member of the Leesville United Methodist Church for many years, as well as the United Methodist Women of the church.  Bernice served her community faithfully as a cemetery trustee for the Leesville Cemetery and president of the Leesville Cemetery Association for many years.  She served as member of the Leesville Village Council.  Many remember her as a fixture on the porch of her Union Street residence always willing to visit a friend or share a story about local history.

She is survived by two sons Larry  (Nancy) Coffy of Bowerston and Gary (Penny) Coffy of Port St. John, FL; two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Betty Stillwell of Denver, CO, Mrs. Viola Glidden of Lexington, NC, Elmer Benjamin Bitikofer, Jr. of Sugarcreek, and George  (Mary) Bitikofer of Bolivar; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Coffy of Merritt Island, FL; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, P. Wells Coffy who she married April 28, 1945, and who died Dec. 21, 1989; two sons, Jerry Wayne and Thomas E. Coffy; one brother, Eugene Bitikofer; two sisters, Lorene Harper and Marilyn Newell, and a great-grandson Caleb Shreffler.

Funeral services were held Sept. 5 in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Rev. Jerralyn Myers officiating.   Interment was in Leesville Cemetery.  To leave an online condolence, visit the funeral home website at www.baxtergardner.com.
