Charles M. Nichols

Charles M. Nichols, 92, of Darringer Ave., Carrollton died Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2009, in his home following an extended illness.

Born May 31, 1917, in Barton, he was a son of the late Ralph and Mabel Rodeski Nichols.

He was a graduate of St. Clairsville High School.  He was a Navy veteran of WWII serving on both the USS Thorn and USS Springfield and retired from TRW Company in Minerva.  He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, life member and past Commander of American Legion Post 428, life member of Carrollton VFW #3301, and a member of USS Thorn DD 647 Association, USS Springfield CL 66 Association, US Navy Memorial Washington, US Navy Cruiser Sailor Association and AARP.

He is survived by a son, Charles (Galyna) Nichols II of Carrollton; three daughters, Charlotte Cole of Queen Creek, AZ, Patricia (John) Stragan and Elizabeth (Randy) Stackhouse, both of Carrollton; 12 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elva in 1995; two daughters, Melva and Laura; a grandson; five sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Thursday June 11 at 11 a.m. in Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home of Carrollton with Pastor Steven Browning officiating.  Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery at Carrollton where full military honors will be provided by American Legion, VFW and DAV.  Visitation will be Wednesday 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral service.
