Bessie E. Wess

Bessie E. Wess, age 86, of Canton died early Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, 2009, in Bowerston Pointe Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 15, 1922, in Dellroy, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Sylvia Moreland McCarty.

She retired in 1984 as a registered nurse for Canton Drop Forge after more than 30 years of service. She had also worked for the Stark County Visiting Nurse's Association.

She was a 1939 graduate of the former Dellroy High School. She graduated from Massillon State Hospital nursing program.  She was an enthusiastic Bingo player and was a league bowler in the Canton area for many years. Bessie was a member of the Canton Sachsenheim Association, the Canton American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ohio Nurse's Association.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda Dovell of Kountze, TX; four sisters, Mae Gaines and Lucille Albaugh, both of Dellroy, Ruth Bowers of Massillon and Ada Buxton of Canton; two brothers, Carl "Bill" McCarty of Canton and Ernest (Barbara) McCarty of Massillon, and a number of nieces and nephews.

On March 25, 1944, she married Edward Wess who died Jan. 20, 2007. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles McCarty and two sisters, Helen Hoffee and Bernice McCarty.

Funeral services were held Feb. 26 in Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Rev. Carol McCartney officiating.  Interment will be at a later date in the Leavittsville Cemetery.
