Alice G. Shankel

Alice G. Shankel age 98, of Mechanicstown, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, in her home with her granddaughter holding her hand.

Born April 8, 1915, in Akron, she was a daughter to Ward and Laura Ethel (Burton) Franklin.

She was a schoolteacher for Canton Local Schools, Minerva Local and retired from Heritage Christian School.  She was in the first graduation class of Canton South High School where she played on the high school basketball team and then went to Kent State University and graduated with a teaching degree.  She was a member of Carrollton Baptist Temple and was involved with Child Evangelism, taught Backyard Bible Club for many years and taught Sunday school at Fairmount Children's Home.  Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will deeply miss her cookies and her special birthday and special occasion cards.

She is survived by a daughter, Jean Slemboski of Canton; two sons, Daniel (Wilma) Shankel of Mechanicstown, and John (Barbara) Shankel of Carmel, IN; nine grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Shankel; son-in-law, Clarence Slemboski; two sisters, Gladyth Hepler and Wilma McCombs and an infant grandchild.

Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Carrollton Baptist Temple with Pastor David Powell officiating.  Burial will be in Moultrie Chapel Cemetery.  Calling hours will be Sunday 1-3 and 7-9 p.m. in Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva.  Memorial contributions may be made to Carrollton Baptist Temple or Child Evangelism Fellowship.  Those wishing to send condolences may sign the online register at www.gotschallfuneralhome.com.
