David L. Thomas
David L. Thomas, 78, of Carrollton, died Saturday evening, Feb. 15, 2014, in Aultman Hospital in Canton.
Born Sept. 17, 1935, in Sherrodsville, he was a son of the late Wilbur and Ella Jane Edie Thomas.
Dave was a retired rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service Carrollton office with 35 years of service where he had been known as the whistling mailman. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of Carrollton First United Methodist Church, Carrollton Masonic Lodge #124, and Carrollton VFW. He was a founding member of the former Carrollton Jaycees where he received a JCI Senatorship award from the Ohio Jaycees and a Distinguished Service Award from the Carrollton Jaycees. He also served as a coach for the Carrollton Hot Stove League. Dave served the Village of Carrollton as a member of the Board of Public Affairs and as a village councilman. In addition to his public service, he was an avid coin collector.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Sandra Boals; two sons, David (Carol) Thomas of Nicholasville, KY, and Douglas (Sandy) Thomas of Sherrodsvillle; a daughter, Dana (Richard) Rogers of Bloomingdale; five grandchildren, Nathan, Breezy, Kylie, Kim and Ashley; a brother, Glenn Thomas of Illinois; and two sisters, Janet Richson and Kay Huffman, both of Texas.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. in Sweeney-Dodd Funeral Home in Carrollton with Rev. Dan Loomis officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Leesville Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home where Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m.
