LaVern Barnhard, age 75, passed away peacefully June 4, 2012, with family and friends by her side. She had lived gracefully and courageously with cancer for several years.
Born Feb. 12, 1937, in Canton, OH, she was the daughter of Wilfred and Gladys McClave.
She grew up and went to high school in Carrollton, OH. She then attended The Ohio State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science. On Nov. 22, 1961, she married Ralph Barnhard. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Eugene, OR, where they would raise their family and spend 50 years of happily married life together.
She taught school in Eugene for 28 years, serving as department chair of Family and Consumer Studies at North Eugene High School for 22 years.
In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed many years of traveling the world together, being active in their church and community, and spending quality time with their family and friends. LaVern genuinely loved people and life. She made the most of each day. She was loved by so many for her kindness, generosity and feisty spirit. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her husband Ralph; daughters, Darci (Bill) Evidon of Seattle, WA, and Megan (Gary) Bertelsen of Eugene, OR; grandchildren, Natalie and Olivia Evidon, and Hans and Hailey Bertelsen.
LaVern's parents and her brother, James McClave, preceded her in death.
A memorial and celebration of LaVern's life will be held Thursday, June 28 at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Eugene (1050 E. 23rd Ave.). Attendees are encouraged to wear color, rather than traditional black.
