John Paul Abel

John Paul AbleJohn Paul Abel, 84, formerly of Lincoln Drive, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born January 11, 1925 in Carrollton, OH, the son of Paul R. and Ina Mae (Dotts) Abel and was an Ashtabula resident for fifty years after moving from Nelsonville, OH.

A graduate of Carrollton High School, he joined the Navy in 1942. After his return from the Navy, he graduated from Muskingum College with a Bachelor of Science degree and later earned his masters in History from the University of Akron. He was a teacher and coach at Harbor High School and was later employed at Edgewood High School as a guidance counselor and coach. He was a track and field official for the Ohio Athletic Association for many years.

His greatest enjoyment came from creating woodcraft projects for Ashcraft Industries. He enjoyed volunteering for the Special Olympics as a track official and a bus driver. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

His survivors include his daughter, Patricia Rockwell of Ashtabula; grandson, Jeff Schultz of Ashtabula; brother, Keith (Judy) Abel of Carrollton; three nephews and three nieces; and good friend, Steve Rockwell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lila, in 2004; son, Mark; his brothers, Myron and Frank Abel; and his parents.

Graveside services will be Thursday, April 30 at 1 p.m. at Westview Cemetery. Ducro Funeral Home and Crematory in Ashtabula was in charge of arrangements. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Post #103 at the calling hours held April 26.
