J. Virginia Smith, age 93, of Sherrodsville, OH, and formerly of Bowerston, died early Tuesday morning, March 13, 2012, in Union Hospital at Dover following a brief illness.
Born May 15, 1918, in Sherrodsville, she was the daughter of the late Glen H. and Alice Louise Clow Caldwell.
Although she was primarily a homemaker for most of her life, she was a former employee of Scio Pottery.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church at Sherrodsville and was a member of the Conotton Valley Garden Club at Bowerston for many years. Virginia was very adept at creating hand-made quilts, and was a very enthusiastic card player.
She is survived by her three children, W. Gene (Nancy) Smith of Canton, OH, Janet Novak of Sherrodsville, and James Bennett (Jane) Smith of Bowerston; her half-brother, Robert Caldwell of Bolivar; her nine grandchildren, Kevin (Vicki) Smith of Massillon, Mrs. Clyde (Gina) Wigert of Stone Creek, Mrs. Jeff (Kelly) Provost of Navarre, Mrs. Brian (Tammy) Enos of Canton, , Terri Novak of Minerva, Stephanie Renicker of New Philadelphia, Stan (Tonya) Novak of Tappan Lake, and Jason and Jamie Smith, both of Brightwood; 22 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Bennett Smith, who died Dec. 20, 2003; her stepmother Edna Caldwell; six brothers; and a stepsister.
Funeral services will be conducted March 17 at 11 a.m. in Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home in Sherrodsville with Rev. Clarke A. Hogue III officiating. Interment will follow in Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens where she will be buried alongside her husband. Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
