Genevieve Elifritz Caldwell Shuman

Genevieve Elifritz Caldwell Shuman, of Sherrodsville, OH, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday evening, Feb. 22, 2013, at the age of 84, at the home of her daughter Wendy, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 5, 1928, in Massillon and was the daughter of the late Ted and Mildred Ashworth Elifritz.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn Harry Caldwell, who died Nov. 11, 1991; a daughter, Mildred Paul, who died Aug. 31, 2009; a grandson, Eric Zeigler, who died April 3, 1995; two brothers, Donald and Bill Elifritz; and a step-daughter, Arla Cycles.

She was valedictorian of the former Sherrodsville High School Class of 1946. She earned an Associate's Degree from Kent State University and employed by the former First National Bank at Sherrodsville where she worked as a custodian for more than 25 years. Genevieve was well known locally for her beautiful singing talents, which she shared for many years at church and community functions, weddings, and funerals. She was a charter member of the Sherrodsville Wesleyan Church, where she served her Lord as an active and faithful member for most of her life.  She served as a song leader, taught Sunday school, was president of the Wesleyan Missionary Society, and served in many other capacities for her church for many years. In addition to her church activities, she was revered by her family as a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Seaward Amos Shuman; four children, Dewaine (Sandy) Caldwell of Union, KY, Chuck (Patsy) Caldwell of Sherrodsville; Mrs. Floyd (Debby) Zeigler of Roswell,  and Mrs. Dan (Wendy) Parson of Bowerston;  a son-in-law,  Rev. David Paul of Vancleve, KY; 10 grandchildren,  Jonathan (Amy) Paul, Jason (Grace) Paul, Tommy Carnes, Ryan (Danielle) Caldwell, Darby (Tori) Caldwell,  Christy (Steve) Watt, Shanna (Phil) Burky, Joshua (Katelyn) Parson, Derek (Aubree) Parson. and Tara Parson;  22 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters, John Elifritz of New Philadelphia,  Raymond (Dolly) Elifritz of Columbus, IN, Jim (Norma) Elifritz of Leavittsville,  Bob Elifritz of Magnolia,  Dale Elifritz of Canton,  Colleen Blymiller of Leavittsville, Cynthia Strawder of Carrollton and Loretta (Ronnie) Hupp of Crossville, N;   step-children, Jim (Patsy) Shuman, Jessie (John) Kooi,  Grace Brown, Lois Lawter, Steve Shuman, and Becky (Gary) Walton, and numerous step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Feb. 27 in the Sherrodsville Wesleyan Church with Pastor Ean Green officiating. Interment will follow in the Sherrodsville Memorial Gardens. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville.
