Ernest Courtheyn, age 90, formerly of Augusta, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, at Rose Lane Health Care Center following a brief illness.
Born July 21, 1920 in Wheeling Valley, OH, he was the son of the late Alphonse and Anna (Levens) Courtheyn.
Upon graduation from Hopedale High School in 1938, he joined and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked at Morgan Engineering Co. from 1941 through 1942 in Alliance before serving three years in the Army during WWII. He proudly served his country in England, Belgium, France and Germany as a member of the 3103rd Signal Service Battalion.
Upon returning from the war he was married July 14, 1945, to the former Erla Leatherberry of Augusta. He worked briefly at Taylorcraft Aviation Corp. before beginning a 37-year career as a union carpenter and millwright. In addition, he was a landlord, cubmaster, charter member of the Augusta VFD, and member of the Augusta Ruritans and Minerva Eagles.
He is survived by his wife Erla; three sons, Terry (Inez) of San Antonio, TX, Don (Doreen) of Deland, FL, and Dennis (Victoria) of Canal Fulton; four grandchildren, Grant, Kent, Kelly and Kristy and three great grandchildren, Riley, Leah and Jackson.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Calling hours will be 12 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 29 at Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. with Rev. Susan Lausch officiating.
