Absentee, write-in votes create headaches

FPS staff report

Election Day in Carroll County was a 24-hour marathon for workers at the Carroll County Board of Elections.

That’s how long it took to complete the tabulation of votes and certify the results. It wasn’t until 6 am. Wednesday morning that officials completed the count of absentee ballots and all write-in ballots cast for members of Carrollton Council and the East Central Educational Service Center board.

All appeared to be going well when elections officials had completed the count from all TSX (electronic voting machines) in all 26 before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

That is when the work began that continued until 6 a.m.

When the job was complete, Challenger Gary Willen had beaten incumbent Charles Johnston by an unofficial count of 4,794 to 4,490 votes.

In the race for Carrollton Council (with the top four being elected) Luke Grimes was the winner with 856 votes, followed by Wilma Lambert, 614; John Yeager, 269; Frank Leghart, 127; Andy Gonda, 59 and Scott Velain, 46.

The only other race that was affected by the absentee ballots was the Rose Twp. trustee race, where Phil Pavick gained enough votes to win over Brian Williams.

The board was meeting to certify results when the FPS had to go to press at 7 a.m. so not date has been scheduled for the official canvas. The 101 provisional ballots cast on Election Day will be counted at the official canvas.
