Council pauses to remember employee

By Jacquie Humphrey
FPS Correspondent

Dellroy Mayor Robert Smith requested a moment of silence for recently deceased street worker Dennis Borland to open the May 11 council meeting.

Borland unexpectedly passed away April 27 while on the job. He was employed by the village of Dellroy for nearly seven years. Smith said  Borland was a dedicated employee who will be sadly missed. Borland was 59 years old.

Council discussed the issue of filling Borland’s position and was advised by Solicitor Ken Welch the hiring of a village employee is at the discretion of council and needs not be advertised.

After some discussion, council voted to offer the position to Ed Minard, who has filled in temporarily since Borland’s death. Street Commissioner John Evans told council that he felt it would be in the best interest of the village to hire Minard, who is already familiar with the village.

In an unrelated matter, council received a request from resident Tim Burkhart to erect a “no left turn” signal at the end of George Lane, where a new restaurant is to be opened.

Burkhart cited the safety of children in that area as the reason for his request. Councilman Dave Lucas urged council to “seriously consider” the request. Council voted unanimously to grant Burkhart’s request.

In other business, council:
-RECEIVED two estimates from Smith for garage door openers and a remote control.  Minerva Garage door submitted an estimate in the amount of $720 and Faircrest Door, of Canton, submitted an estimate in the amount of $1170. After a brief discussion, council decided to table this matter until a later date.

-RECEIVED three estimates from two separate contractors, for paving work for village streets and alleys.  JD Mining of Magnolia submitted bids in the following amounts: $1,980 for Day Street, $3,686 for McGee Lane, and $7,832 for Penn Street.  Central Allied of Canton submitted bids of $2,650 for Day Lane, $4,650 for McGee Lane, and $7,200 for Penn St.

After some discussion council decided to wait until the results of Carroll County’s CDBG Grant are announced for 2009 before making any decisions regarding paving, because these streets were the projects applied for in the CDBG grant applications.

-SCHEDULED the next meeting June 8 at 7 p.m.
