Off-year election attracts many candidates

FPS staff report

The November election ballot is set... well almost.

The deadline for candidates to file petitions for the Nov. 3 election was Aug. 20 and many took advantage of the opportunity to seek public office. The deadline for write-in candidates to file is Sept. 2. Once that deadline has passed, the ballot will be set.

With the filings, races have been established for many village offices, school boards, township trustees and the lone countywide race, Carroll County Municipal Court Judge.

Charles A. Johnston of 3145 Steubenville Rd., Carrollton, the incumbent, is being challenged by Gary L. Willen of 56 Cheyenne Trail, Malvern, for election as Carroll County Municipal Court judge. The term runs from Jan. 1, 2010, through Dec. 31, 2016.

Those seeking election as village officials, members of boards of education and township trustees are as follows:

VILLAGE OFFICIALS
Since only three individuals filed for the 4 seats on Carrollton Village Council, there will be an appointment for the vacancy come Jan. 1.
Unless - a 4th person files a petition as a write-in candidate by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2.

With 4 seats open at the November election, only three individuals filed for the four expiring terms by the Aug. 20 4 p.m. deadline last Thursday.

According to the Carroll County Board of Elections, petitions were filed by Sharon Ott of 332 2nd St. NE, Wilma Lambert of 240 Butler Ave. NW, and Luke Grimes of 41 E. Main St., Apt. B, all Carrollton. Ott and Lambert are both incumbents and Grimes is a newcomer.

Council terms expiring, in addition to Ott and Lambert, include Robert Dunlap and John Yeager, who did not seek re-election.

Contest in Dellroy

Seven individuals have filed for the four seats to be vacated on Dellroy Village Council.

Seeking new 4-year terms are Paul A. Long of 12 Smith St., Harry J. Mabie Jr. of 10 W. Main St., Christopher R. Modranski of 15 N. Liberty St., Gary McNutt of 25 1/2 N. Smith St., Kay Onstott of 8 N. Ohio St., James W. West of 17 N. Arch St., and Donald Williams of 8 E. Main St. Incumbents are Mabie, Modranski, Onstott and West.

In Leesville, no one filed for Village Council. Terms expiring Dec. 31, 2009, are Joe Perko, Robert Stauffer, Robert Romig and Ed Alsept.

However, Alsept of 180 E. Market St. is seeking election to the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2011, as Leesville Mayor.
Malvern

In Malvern, only three individuals filed for the four seats to be vacated on Malvern Village Council. They are Robert R. DeLong of 403 Avondale, Angela Lambert of 102 E. Main St. and Kathy Ritter of 215 E. Grant St. Incumbents whose terms are expiring Dec. 31, 2009, are Richard Contini and Joe Gamber.

Seeking the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2011, as Malvern Mayor are Steve Adams of 322 E. Porter St. and Michael James McCort of 312 E. Porter St.

Sherrodsville.
In Sherrodsville, only one person, Irvin Newell of 34 2nd St. SW, filed for one of the four seats on Sherrodsville Village Council. Terms expiring Dec. 31, 2009, include Newell, Amy McCormick, Jason Bagozzi and Louise Baker.

Area Villages
Candidates filling for Village offices in area villages include the following:
Magnolia Council - Stephen Loomis of 522 Morges Rd., Jim Miller of 966 Canal St., Claudia Corbett Rogers of 351 Harrison St., and Roger A. Ruegg of 322 E. Carrollton St.

Minerva Council - Marsha K. Bishop of 401 Murray Ave., Phil Davison of 916 E. 1st St., and Billie I. Rowe of 302 E. Latzer Ave.

Waynesburg Council - Sherry L. Betts of 203 E. Lisbon St., Dick Dierick of 139 James St., Brian Haslam of 167 E. Lisbon St., Larry A. Hawkins of 244 N. Mill St., Frederick A. Pisani of 430 W. Lisbon St., William E. Richardson of 149 Market St., and Kenneth K. Swogger of 305 W. Lisbon St.

Waynesburg Board of Trustees of Public Affairs - William Michel of 138 Wilson Ave.

Amsterdam Council - Hollie A. Boyuk of 141 Ridgewood Dr., Jan L. Manson of 117 Euclid St., Martin L. McCallister Sr. of 221 S. Main St. and Edwin L. Willison of 123 Euclid St., all incumbents.

Bergholz Council - Ronald W. Brodzinski of 126 1st St., Ronald Gower of 220 2nd St., Gary E. Griffith (incumbent) of 224 2nd St., Nick Howell of 129 1st St., Bob Kirkman (incumbent) of 701 Garfield St., and Greg Wood of 138 1st St. Incumbents whose terms are expiring Dec. 31, 2009, are James L. Stone and Mary Frances Shepherd, who did file for re-election.

Salineville Council - Mark T. Wood of 5 Market St., Paul E. Jarvis Sr. of 90 W. Main St., James B. Howdershelt of 325 Foundry Hill Rd., Rick Beadle of 303 Washington St. and Amy Earich of 404 Jefferson St.

Hanoverton Council - David Kiewall of 10081 Main St., Jane E. Wilson of 9006 Plymouth St., Jack W. Barrett of 9182 Plymouth St. and James C. Myers of 30136 Clinton St.

Bowerston Council - George Benish, 302 Liberty St., and Lester Milo Baker of 402 E. Main St.

Scio Council -Ronald Wright of 106 Church St. (incumbent), Mark Kelley of 203 School House St., Jeff Snyder of 313 W. Main St., Earl Whiteman of 140 Hilltop Dr. and Dennis W. Ziegler of 314 W. Main St.

Scio treasurer - Linda Long of 309 Eastport St.
