Taylor Thompson, a senior this fall at Carrollton High School, has qualified to participate in the National Forensic League tournament to be held June 13-19 in Birmingham, AL.
According to Mrs. Alzana Nuzzolillo, CHS Speech and Debate coach, Thompson will be competing daily in the Untied States Extemporaneous Speaking division of the national event.
Mrs. Nuzzolillo said Thompson qualified for the national honor by placing 1st in the Eastern Ohio district tournament which includes high schools from Carroll, Tuscarawas, Stark, Summit and Wayne counties.
Traveling with Thompson will be Mrs. Nuzzolillo and her husband, Ron Jr., both coaches at CHS who will be judging performances throughout the week at the national tournament. Thompson’s mother, Marjorie Thompson of 544 12th St. NW, Carrollton, plans to attend the national event finals Friday.
Mrs. Nuzzolillo said the National Forensic League (NFL) has run the National Speech Tournament continuously since 1931 (except for the World War II years) and the National Student Congress since 1938. Events and rules have changed with the growth of the NFL, but the League’s commitment to providing exciting competition has remained constant, she noted.
“Six main speech events, four types of debate competition, two consolidation speech events and four supplemental speech events produce national champions at the end of an action-packed week of competition,” she said. Wining students are rewarded with outstanding trophies and over $130,000 in college scholarships,” Mrs. Nuzzolillo added.
She said the final rounds of the national event will be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex concert hall Friday, June 19, and can be viewed live on the web at http:///www.uvm.edu/debatetheater. |
