New ballfield coming to town

By Carol McIntire
Editor

T-ball and coach-pitch ball players will soon have a new playing field in Sherrodsville.

Village council approved the construction of a new field, solely for the use of coach-pitch and T-ball teams during its regular meeting Monday.

Keith Imes and Joe Weber spoke on behalf of the teams, saying they previously looked at two locations, but felt the vacant field behind the village fire station would be the most suitable and require the least amount of dirt excavation to construct.

“We have a backstop donated to us that we can move after the season is complete,” Imes said. “His company (pointing to Weber) is donating the sand and the rental of a dozer if we require one. The league has liability insurance so there will be no cost to the village.”

Imes noted the season for coach-pitch and T-ball ends in late June, so Imes said there should not be any conflict with the village fire department’s homecoming.

In an unrelated matter, council added two names to the village fire department roster upon the recommendation of the department. William Adams and Brent Simmons were approved as members pending passage of a background check and completion of  a one-year probation.

Mayor Kathy Huffman told council the Dellroy Fire Department requires background checks on all new members. “They must pay for the background check, which is $35, and if they pass the check and become a member, they are reimbursed by the department,” she said.

Council  liked the idea and agreed that any future members must complete a background check before being added to the roster. Huffman also suggested the department put a cap on the number of members in the department. Councilman Jason Bagozzi said he believes there are only 24 members on the department and there were about 30 when the department was formed.

In other business, council:
-SET June 1 as the date when rates for ambulance service will increase. Increases were approved at the April meeting.

-APPROVED spending an additional $150 to purchase supplies for the ambulance since the purchase of oxygen and a batter used up nearly all the funds appropriated last month.

-THANKED everyone who has assisted Sherrodsville Community Ambulance by providing mutual aid, during National EMS Week, which is this week.

-DISCUSSED the recent clean-up day, which was such a success, council agreed to pay for another dumpster to placed in the village June 20. Councilman Ken Moffat said the dumpster was placed in the village on Thursday prior to the Saturday event the last time.

By Saturday morning it was already full, which left many village residents with no where to place their items.

Council agreed with residents who suggested June 20 for the next date since it follows the village-wide yard sale June 13.

-AGREED to spend up to $200 to repair the flag pole and lights.

-RECEIVED a report on the Earth Day clean up from Fiscal Officer Valerie Worrell. She said approximately 40 people (mostly children) participated and three groups were formed. They picked up 12 bags of recyclable materials and eight bags of trash.

-AGREED to spend up to $1,500 for mosquito spraying this year. Moffat said he would like to have three sprayings this year.

-APPROVED the placement of a billboard at the intersection of SR 39 and SR 212 by the Carroll County Safe Kids Chapter promoting water safey. Mayor Huffman will approve the location.

-HEARD Solicitor Ken Welch applaud Worrell for her favorable audit report. Worrell said the only findings pertained to the village fire department for not having funds incorporated into the village’s fund list.

-SET the next meeting for June 15 at 7:30 p.m. in village hall.
