Veteran councilman conducts session

Sherrodsville Council turned to its most senior member for leadership in the absence of the mayor and council president Monday evening.

When neither Mayor Kathy Huffman or Council President Stacy Sanders were not in attendance 10 minutes after the 7:30 p.m. start time, Councilman Bud Newell stepped to the head of the table and conducted the session.

Fire Chief Terry Sanders and Councilman Ken Moffat both had Fire Department issues to discuss. Sanders said the department plans to visit Sherrodsville Elementary School this week to review fire and tornado drill procedures. The department plans to participate in the statewide Tornado Drill March 25 at 9:50 a.m. and will host a fish fry April 3 from 5:30 until 8 p.m. in the Fire Dept. eat stand.

Council agreed to put Matt Iverson on the fire department for a one-year probation period. He will not be accepted as a full-fledged member until he completes the required 36-hour training course.

At the request of Moffat, council approved a change to the Sherrodsville Community Fire Dept. by-laws relating to a quorum. The number of members present at meeting to constitute a quorum was changed from 51 percent to one third of those on the active member roster.

In other business, council:
-HEARD a Fair Housing presentation by Sonja Leggett of the Carroll County Commissioners office. Leggett said all communities who receive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding must receive Fair Housing Training. Anyone with questions or concerns about fair housing can contact her at the Commissioners office at 330-627-4869.

-ADOPTED a pay-scale ordinance as an emergency measure. The following rates were set: Council, $25 per month; Mayor, $117 per month; Solicitor, $200 per month; Fiscal Officer, $500 per month; EMS Coordinator, $200 per month; Street Department employees, $7.30 per month; and village hall cleaning services, $25 per month.

-AGREED to a change in the franchise contract with Time Warner Cable changing the company to a video service provider from a cable TV provider and agreed to accept a one percent franchise fee.

-PAID bills totaling $7,072.

-LEARNED Fiscal Officer Valerie Worrell would like to set up a Kids Clean Up Day April 25 in the village to teach children to be good stewards of the land. Details will be announced at the April meeting.

-LEARNED the Green Valley Ruritans are constructing a new pavilion in the park. Newell will check will the carpentry class at Buckeye Career Center about purchasing picnic tables for the new pavilion.
