A possible lightning strike has been blamed for causing a barn fire in Augusta Twp. last Thursday while arson is suspected in a barn fire Sunday night in Loudon Twp.

Carrollton Village Fire Department firefighters were called to the barn fire at 5 p.m. last Thursday at the Robert and Kim King residence at 6030 Macaw Rd., NE, Minerva. The 40x60-foot barn contained storage equipment, grain and hay. No damage estimate was given on the loss.

Mutual aide was provided by volunteer fire departments from Carroll County, Augusta and Brown Twp.

Arson is suspected in a fire that destroyed a 24x36-foot barn at the Anthony Fernwalt residence at 4375 Post Rd., Jewett, Sunday night.

According to Loudon Twp. Fire Chief Bill Miller, the cause of the fire has been determined as possible arson by John Webber of the state fire marshal’s office who visited the site and made an investigation report early Monday morning. Miller said there was no electric in the barn and the fire started in the entrance way on the southeast corner of the combination barn and storage shed. Contents lost in the blaze included bicycles, a sewing machine and other miscellaneous items.

According to Chief Miller, approximately 25,000 gallons of water were used to extinguish the blaze. Some 30 firefighters responded to the alarm with Loudon Twp. providing three trucks. Mutual aide was provided by Carroll County, Carrollton Village Fire Department, Augusta, Perrysville and Scio-Jewett.

Chief Miller said fire fighters were on the scene until 1:34 a.m. Monday and were called back Monday morning when some of the embers rekindled. The damage amount is undetermined, Miller said.
