A Carrollton bank executive who has been active in community service and volunteer work in the Carrollton area for the past several years was honored at the Carrollton Civic Club’s Distinguished Service Award (DSA) banquet last Thursday evening at the Atwood Yacht Club.
Linda Shotwell, vice president and branch manager of National City Bank in Carrollton, received the DSA for 2008 from Atty. Sean Smith, who nominated this year’s recipient. The award is sponsored annually by the Carrollton Civic Club.
In his opening introductory remarks, Atty. Smith pointed out Mrs. Shotwell has served as Treasurer of the Bell-Herron Scholarship Foundation for the past 20 years.
She also serves on the Carroll County District Library Board and is a former member of the Carroll County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
Smith credited Shotwell for serving as a past president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and Carrollton Suburban Garden Clubs. She is also a member of Carrollton Business Women and has spent many volunteer hours helping at the annual Algonquin Mill Fall Festival at Petersburg.
Smith said Shotwell also has volunteered her time at the annual Carroll County Junior Fair 4-H and FFA livestock auctions and has made a tremendous difference in the lives of young men and women from Carrollton High School.
As one of her close friends said, “She just can’t say No”, Smith told the group.
In citing Mrs. Shotwell’s volunteer work with the Bell-Herron Scholarship Foundation, Smith noted she was instrumental during the past year in helping draft a new investment policy to assist in managing the different types of gifts the Foundation now receives. “Quite honestly, I don’t know how the Foundation could do what it does without her,” he remarked.
As a member of the Carrollton Business Women, Smith said Linda has helped with the Christmas lights, the Reading Is Fun (RIF) program, spelling bee and scholarship awards.
She is a past president of the Suburban Garden Club and currently serves as the club’s vice president, helping plant flowers annually at the Vets Park, Firehouse, McCook House and Kiddie-Land Park.
Linda and her husband, Steve, reside at 90 Penny Rd., Carrollton. They have two grown children, Wendy Alexander of Leesville and Clayton Shotwell of Carrollton.
Judges for this year’s DSA recipient were Lynn Poplin, Bob Dunlap and Denny Roudebush.
Entertainment for this year’s banquet was provided by Tim Angeloni, a well known magician from Louisville, assisted by his wife, Pauline.
During the welcome, Civic Club President Chris Jones introduced Michelle Aladich, vice president of Special projects for the YMCA of Stark County, who was a special guest. Jones noted Ms. Aladich also has been involved with the operation of the local YMCA for the past several years, including a recent major capital improvement project at our local facility.
