The Fourth of July holiday will provide plenty of color in the skies above Atwood Lake and Atwood Lake Park.
A full slate of activities over the holiday weekend (July 3-5) is planned, including the traditional giant fireworks show on Saturday, July 4. The fireworks show begins at dark and is ignited near Atwood Lake Resort and Conference Center, but is visible from most locations in the surrounding area.
Numerous other events also are planned at Atwood Lake Park. Events begin July 3 at 11 a.m. with a bicycle safety check presented by the staff of Ernie’s Bicycle Shop. Then at 1 p.m., the park Nature Center opens for the day.
On July 4, a full day of events leads up to the fireworks show. Activities include a fishing instruction session and children’s crafts, both at 10 a.m., followed by the annual “Firecracker Tie Dye T-Shirt Contest” at 11 a.m. A nature hike is planned at 1 p.m., a bicycle decorating contest and camper cornhole tournament are set at 2 p.m. and a bike parade follows at 4 p.m.
The evening’s events begin at 7 p.m. with the Phil & Sparky Band playing at the beach, followed by the fireworks show at dark.
Events on July 5 include an adult craft at 10 a.m. and a craft for campers ages 4 and up at noon. The “Great American Rib Burn Off” is planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with ribs prepared by several participants.
Overnight camping is available in the park and the park’s swimming beach will be open all weekend long.

Tappan Lake Park
The fun and fireworks over the Fourth of July holiday can be found at Tappan Lake Park.
Besides a full schedule of activities throughout the weekend, the park’s annual giant holiday fireworks show is set for July 3 at dark.
Numerous other activities for all members of the family also are planned throughout the weekend at the park.
Events begin Friday with a T-shirt craft at 11 a.m. The Joe Zelek Band will be back at Tappan from Nashville with a show scheduled to begin at the beach at 8 p.m. The giant fireworks show at the beach will begin at dark complete with food vendors available.
On Saturday the park will host a Fourth of July parade beginning at 11 a.m., complete with judging and prizes. A disc jockey, “Mr. Moe and Music Machine,” is scheduled to spin the hits at 8 p.m. at the basketball courts. Sunday’s (July 5) events include a kids’ activity and horseshoe games.
Overnight camping also is available and the park’s swimming beach will be open all week and weekend.

Minerva Celebration
The Minerva Heritage Holiday will be held in Municipal Park and at Minerva High School in the new auditeria as well as the parking lot outside the school.
The weekend starts off July 3 with a book sale a the Minerva Library along with a craft show in the Community Building from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. In the midway at the park, there will be food vendors and inflatable toys for the children as well as some games for all ages from noon until 5 p.m.
The Miss Minerva pageant will begin in the high school auditeria at 2 p.m. with the crowning set for 6 p.m.
Evening activities in the park include a performance by the Bur-le-ques Square Dancing from 5-6 p.m., Heart of the Country Cloggers from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the bank Border Line (formerly known as Vintage Country) will close out the evening .
July 4th activities begin with a pancake and sausage breakfast at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on E. Line St., from 8-10 a.m. The breakfast is sponsored by Relay for Life.
The craft show, food, games and toys will again be open in Municipal Park. A quilt show display, art exhibit and flower show will be held ion the high school auditeria. The Minerva Pool will be open for free swimming from noon until 6 p.m. The Haas Museum will be open from noon until 4 p.m. each day of the celebration. There will be walking house tours all thee days, sponsored by the Minerva Historical Society.
A garden Tour will be held July 4 from 1-5 p.m. with a rain date of July 5. Tickets for the garden tour will be sold in the Community Buildings beginning July 3 up until the time the tour begins July 4.
Local vocalist Cathy Horn will sing patriotic songs in front of Minerva Village hall beginning at 1:30 p.m. The sidewalks will be decorated with sidewalk art to entertain visitors until the start of the Minerva Heritage Parade at 2 p.m. Jerry Grimes is grand marshal for the parade. Lineup beging at 1 p.m. in Rotary Park. The restored 9-11 fire truck will be in the parade and later be parked in Municipal Park for viewing.
The group Sight Unseen, a group of young people from Minerva High School, will perform in the park. At 9 p.m., there will be movies, provided by Shawn Hetrick of the Minerva Art Group.
On July 5, the Quilt Display, Art Exhibit and Flower Show will be open from noon a.m. until 4 p.m., the craft show will be open in the Community Building, and a car show will be held in the high school parking lot.
Relay for Life is sponsored a Duck Derby at 2 p.m. The group Gospel Spirits and the Speelman sisters will provide musical entertainment beginning at 2 p.m. in the park. |
