Golden Age Retreat planning busy spring and summer

FPS staff report

The Carroll Golden Age Retreat is celebrating!

There are many activities planned at the Golden Age Retreat.  A Mother's Day and Employee Appreciation Day is planned for May 9 beginning at 2 p.m.  A Memorial Day picnic will be held May 23 and the bus will be in the Memorial Day parade being held May 26.  The home will have an iced tea stand at the Rib's Burnoff June 7 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds.  Other summer events include a Fourth of July picnic and the annual Open House on Aug. 30.

Carroll Golden Age Retreat is the Carroll County Home located north of Carrollton on Rt. 9.  The county owned rest home provides assisted living and custodial care for 45 to 50 residents.  The county home has been in existence in one form or another since 1839.  It has been at its current location since 1871.

In 1938, the Carroll County Hospital, as it was called, was built with county funds and opened for use.  The building deteriorated and the new facility was built and the old renovated with money from a bond issue.  This facility has continued to serve the elderly and fragile populations of Carroll County since 1954.  For the last 20 years, major improvements and repairs have continued to help keep up with modern age.

The facility provides 24 hour nursing care, complete dietary, housekeeping and laundry.  The facility strives to maintain a home like environment serving home cooked meals using locally raised meat and produce as much as possible.  Donations are a welcome addition any time and help keep within the budget.

The current county home is financially independent of the general fund.  It is financed by residents' private pay-in and funds received from the tax levy that is run every five years.  No county residents are turned away for inability to pay the full monthly fee.  Admission is based on individual evaluation of current care needs.

There are currently only 36 county homes still in existence in the State of Ohio.  Visitors are welcome.
