Councilwoman earns praise

Jacquie Humphrey
FPS Correspondent

Leesville Council President Doug Mallernee thanked Councilwoman Peggy Minder for all of her efforts and hard work in obtaining a litter clean up grant on behalf of the village, and then orchestrating a cleanup at the May 12 council meeting.

Minder said Leesville was the only village in Carroll County to apply for and receive the litter clean up grant offered through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

On May 9, the village, with the assistance of Orange Township and over 50 community volunteers, collected nearly 600 discarded tires, five tons of trash, and an undetermined amount of scrap metal.

Minder said she is very pleased with the outcome of the event but noted if the village opts to hold a cleanup day in 2010, she would like to coordinate in April, on Earth Day.

Village employee Fred Guthrie told council he cleaned several village drain covers and storm drains but many of the catch basins also need attention. He was advised to proceed with the project.

In other business, council:
-DISCUSSED the need for a 20 foot extension ladder and approved the purchase, up to $300.00.

-LEARNED from Councilman Ed Alsept Scio American Legion will dispose of the village’s old flag. Alsept offered to take any additional flags, including those of village residents, for disposal. Anyone who has a flag(s) that they need properly disposed of should contact Alsept.

-HEARD Mallernee inquire as to council’s intent for holding a community yard sale. After some discussion it was decided to schedule this event to coincide with the same for Bowerston. Further details will be released at a later date.

-LEARNED Alsept met with several community members and the village is set to host its annual Memorial Day parade and covered dish picnic. The parade will honor veterans. Ayone interested in participating should contact Bob Romig at 740-269-2609 or meet in the parking lot of Faith Community Chapel at approximately 10:30 a.m. May 25. The parade will proceed from the parking lot of Faith Community Chapel at approximately 11:15 to the village cemetery. Following a brief ceremony, everyone is invited to a covered dish dinner at Leesville First United Methodist Church. Further details will be posted in the village’s post office prior to the event.
-SET the next regular meeting June 9 at 7 p.m.
