Firefighters receive training

FPS staff report

Several members of the Carrollton Village Fire Department (CVFD) received training at The Upper Ohio Valley Fire and Rescue School March 28 and 29.

Each member participated in a different training course in order to acquire varied training to be applied to the CVFD MERIT Program.  The Multi-Emergency Rapid Intervention Team (MERIT) program was established to transform members of the CVFD into a highly trained search and rescue (SAR) team.

Each attendee will in turn conduct a class for the rest of the department  to pass on the skills attained.

Firefighters who attended and the course they participated in are:  Chief Tom Mesler, NIMS 300, a federally required course for fire chiefs; Asst. Chief Bill Wells and Ed Trushel, Leadership training; Chris Brooks, Incident Safety Officer (ISO); Chad Wells, ATV Search and Rescue; Todd Rutledge, Farm Extrication; Nick Jackson, Meth Lab Awareness for First Responders; Andy Gonda, Firefighter Survival Tactics and Rick Eddy, Hunter Rescue.

CVFD/MERIT Coordinator Rick Eddy stated, “The goal of the CVFD/MERIT Program is to provide residents and visitors of Carroll County with rapid, competent and compassionate rescue service.”  Denny Roudebush of Carroll Electric Cooperative, Inc. will be providing training on electrical safety at the CVFD April 27 meeting.

Eddy, who participated in the Hunter Rescue course learned there are 275,000 bow hunters in Ohio.  Nationally one out of every three hunting injuries involves a tree stand and 75 percent or more falls occur while the hunter is climbing in or out of the tree stand.
