Ceremony holds special meaning for sister

FPS staff report

Cicely WorthingtonCicely Worthington attended the unveiling of the new veteran’s memorial honoring veterans of World War I and II.

The unveiling, held Nov. 15 in the Amsterdam Park, was of special importance to Worthington.  Her brothers, Jack and Ted, are honored on the memorial.  Both were in the United States Army and served in WWII.

Worthington explained, “Jack was in the service before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  After Pearl Harbor he was shipped overseas and shipped out quickly because we were in danger.”  Jack was serving in North Africa in 1943 when he was killed.  Brother, Ted, also serving in North Africa, was given a three-day pass by General George Patton to find Jack’s gravesite.  Jack, originally buried in an Arab cemetery in Tunisia, was brought back and interred in Ft. Steuben Cemetery in Wintersville.

Cicely, her brothers and a sister, are natives of Amsterdam.
