Local men place in horseshoe tournament

FPS staff report

Horseshoe tournament
TOURNAMENT WINNERS.  Five members of the Carrollton Eagles #2185 Horseshoe Club placed in the Eagles National Horseshoe Tournament held Aug. 2 and 3 in Pennsylvania.  Pictured above from left (front):  Dave Sheppard, BJ Baker and Earl Johnson.  Standing behind is Neil Moreland and George Johnson.

Five local men competed in the Fraternal Order of Eagles National Horseshoe Tournament held Aug. 2 and 3 in New Brighton, PA.

Members of Carrollton Eagles #2185 Horseshoe Club traveled to Pennsylvania to compete against over 100 Eagles members from across the United States.  Dave Sheppard placed first in “B” class; Neil Moreland, first in “H” class and BJ Baker, first in “J” class.  Earl Johnson and George Johnson placed second and third respectively in “J” class.

In order to determine classes, participants throw 50 horseshoes and their percentage of ringers determines which class they compete in.

The Horseshoe Club pitches shoes every Sunday at 1 p.m. and Monday and Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Brenner Rd.   The public is welcome.  The area where the horseshoe pits are located was once part of a farm and was donated to the Eagles.  Horseshoe Club members have fixed the pavilion, put in restrooms, installed three new horseshoe pits and added new picnic tables.  A swing set and slide was donated and the club recently purchased new swing seats and chains.

Horseshoe Club member George Johnson said, “We are proud of the work we have done.  The money used for the repairs here is from recycling aluminum cans we collect from the Eagles and cans people donate to us.”  Anyone wishing to donate cans to the Carrollton Eagles #2185 Horseshoe Club can drop them at the Eagles during regular hours of 10 -1 a.m., seven days a week.

Members Neil Moreland and Denny Haddock competed at the Harrison County Fair and placed first in the team division.
