Richard “Hank” McClellan retired as Minerva Fire chief in March.

2009 has come and gone. 
The FPS took the opportunity to search the archives and highlight some of the events as we close the book on 2009.

JANUARY:
-After a lengthy executive session with Prosecuting Attorney Don Burns, Carroll County Commissioners agreed to sign a termination agreement to stop the new skilled nursing facility project on SR 9.  Commissioners said the termination was a direct result of an appeal of the county’s application for a bed license.

-Minerva Lions boys basketball team continued their undefeated streak of 7-0 with a win over Marlington 69-64.

-Tammi Hulit was reelected president of Brown Local Board of Education.  Dechelle Thompson was elected vice president.

-Despite a 69-59 loss to Alliance, Carrollton senior lady cager Mandy Noble scored a game high 27 points.

-Former Sandy Valley School Superintendent Rock VanFossen, administrative assistant in charge of the building program, was joined by School Superintendent David Janofa and board members to dedicate the new school buildings.  Approximately 1,500 people attended the dedication where accolades were given to residents of the district for making the $38.5 million project a reality. 

-Longtime advocate of people with disabilities, Karl Schumacher, was honored for his service on the Carroll Hills Industries Board and the MRDD board.  He started and oversaw a housing consortium for his daughter and another individual in the program. 

-Three Carrollton wrestlers placed at the Top Gun Tournament in Alliance.  Heavy weight Kevin Malone placed fourth, 171-pounder Josh Miller, 5th and 130-pounder Chris Young, 8th place.

-Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District announced it plans to sell the Atwood Lake Resort.

-Jarrod Baggott, a 6th grade student at Malvern Middle School, won the Brown Local School District spelling bee and won the right to compete in the Repository’s regional spelling bee.

FEBRUARY:
-Representatives of Ohio Operations for Rosebud Mining Company announced they plan to invest $30 million to develop a deep mine portal and related facilities in Union Twp.
-Minerva’s Taylor Maurer, a sophomore guard, hit five three-pointers to break the single season record for three pointers in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference win over Northwest.    Maurer also holds the school record for three points made in a single season with 46.

-Seven Little Warrior wrestlers  competed at the state tournament in Akron.  They were:  Matt Hoopes, Justin Shaw, Adam Shaw, Jimmy Galbraith, Hunter Pizzino, Trent Mays and Tyler Dodd.  Pizzino went on to win his 95-pound class.

-Emily Henry, daughter of Richard and Sandy Henry of Scio, and Tucker West, son of Steven and Teresa West, were crowned Conotton Valley High School’s winter homecoming  queen and king.

-Bell-Herron Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team finished the season with 17-0 record and claimed the post-season Northeastern Buckeye Conference tournament title.

-Carroll County Fair Board approved a contract with a new ride company for the 2009 fair.  Lisko Amusement of Youngstown will provide 12 rides and three food concession stands.

-Carrollton bowler Andrew Whaley bowled a 620 series at a sectional bowling tournament and won the opportunity to compete at districts.  This was the Carrollton bowling teams’ first year in competition.

MARCH:
-Richard “Hank” McClellan, hung up his turnout gear March 1, ending more than 50 years of public service to his community.  McClellan was a member of Minerva Volunteer Fire Department, serving as chief since July 25, 2000.

-With the help of grants, American Axle and Manufacturing/Colfor Manufacturing in Malvern received an electric upgrade costing $1.3 million and saving approximately 40 jobs.

-Malvern Hornets boys basketball team outscored Tuscarawas Central Catholic 92-57 in the Division IV sectional opener.

-Minerva Lady Lions defeated Norton 64-31 to win the Division II Sectional championship.

-The Carroll County YMCA held a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating their four-month long renovation project costing around $115,000.

-Samantha Jordan, a 7th grade student at Minerva, was named runner-up at the regional grand finale spelling bee held in Canton.

-A total of 17 new beekeepers will be located in Carroll County thanks to a project launched by Crossroads Resource Conservation & Development and Ohio Beekeeper’s Association.

-Fran Cole was honored for 49 years of distinguished service to the county through her work at the Carroll County District Library.  She was hired in 1959 as the clerk-treasurer, then appointed to the Trustee Board in 1968.

-Carrollton Warriors boys basketball team upset Dover 62-51 allowing them to advance to the “Sweet 16” and claim the Zanesville Division II district championship.

-Six American Legion members, whose years of membership total 340, where honored at the annual birthday dinner.  Those honored included:  Charles M. Nichols, Robert W. Tasker, Charles (Danny) DeBertrand, Glenn R. George, John H. McLoney and George E. (Bud) Smith.

APRIL:
-The Village of Carrollton was selected as Ohio Rural Development’s 2009 Earth Day project.  The village received $8 million in total funding to finance expansion of its wastewater treatment plant.
    
-Crystal Koons of Carrollton set a new series record and became the top series bowler of all-time at Carroll Lanes.  Koons bowled a 235, 257 and 267 for a 759 series.

-Carrollton head bowling coach Kurt Lumley was named Stark County High School Bowling Conference American Division Boys Coach of the Year. Lumley was instrumental in organizing the first high school bowling team at Carrollton and guided the boys team to the American Division title in its initial year.

-Coach Janet Sheets’ Lady Warriors beat Minerva 5-2 in their first win at Minerva in four years.

-Joe Sabol was named a Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross 2009 Hometown Hero.   Sabol was rewarded for his quick response saving the lives of his granddaughter and great grandchild when a man burst into her home  in June 2008.

-Noah Allison became the 108th member of Malvern’s Boy Scout Troop 155 to earn Eagle Scout recognition. 

-Linda Shotwell, vice president and branch manager of National City Bank in Carrollton, received the Carrollton Civic Club’s Distinguished Service Award.

MAY:
-Amanda Tubaugh of Bacon Rd., Carrollton, was appointed deputy director at the Carroll County Board of Elections.

-Four Carrollton High School students were inducted into Buckeye’s National Technical Honor Society.  They were:  Amber Furbee, graphic arts; Victoria Peake, culinary arts; Kayla Albrecht, cosmetology; and David Little, precision machining.

-Four members of the Carrollton High School FFA Chapter received their State FFA Degree at the Ohio FFA Convention.  They included:  Brittanie Logan, Samantha Grubbs, Jordan Morsheiser and Chelsea McIntire.

-The Carrollton Board of Education recommended selling the Carroll Co. Veteran’s Memorial Pool and property consisting of 2.037 acres. 

-Carroll County Transit was awarded $80,000 in Community Investment Grants by The American Cancer Society to provide transportation to cancer patients.  Only four agencies in northeast Ohio received this grant.

-Jordan Schlabach, an eighth grade student at Bell-Herron Middle School, brought home two silver medals on the vault and beam and a bronze in all around at the Great Lakes YMCA Zone gymnastics meet.  She also placed seventh in the floor exercise.
-Tara King and Jamie “Chip” Wright reigned as Minerva High School’s 2009 prom queen and king.

-The Bell-Herron Middle School girls track team ended its season placing third at the annual Northeastern Buckeye Conference meet.  Taylor Lowdermilk placed first in the high jump.

JUNE:
-Brittany Moyer and Kayla Bennett were honored at the Carrollton High School commencement for having 13 years of perfect attendance.

-Brown Local Board of Education consolidated the middle school and high school principalships into one position.  Mrs. Jane Swinderman became High School/Middle School Principal for the 2009-2010 school year.  High School Principal Douglas Schmidt retired July 31.

-The Sandy Valley Lady Cardinals softball team scored an unearned run without a hit in the top of the seventh inning to win the Division III regional championship.  This earned the team a trip to the state championship, the first time a Cardinal team proceeded to the state championships.

-Carrollton Mayor Dave Flanary suggested council members entertain the idea of purchasing the Carroll County Veteran’s Pool.

-Rachel Phillips and Roger Buckley were crowned the 2009 junior-senior prom queen and king at Southern Local’s prom.

-Ben Smith, a member of Malone University’s men’s golf team, was voted NAIA First Team All-American.  Smith helped the team place sixth in the NAIA National Championships with a +4 with a 288 total for the four-round event.

-Minerva eighth grader Kaele Lightfoot won the 400 meter race at the Middle School State Track & Field Championships.  She had a time of 59.83 to win the Division II-III title.

-The auction of the Carroll County Vet’s Pool was put on hold when Carroll Co. Common Pleas Court Judge Dominick E. Olivito Jr. issued a temporary restraining order after a preliminary injunction was filed by the Carroll Co. Veteran’s Club against the Carrollton Board of Education.

JULY:
-Fairgoers were treated to 56 new aluminum seats in the grandstand.  An anonymous donor purchased the seats for $15,000.

-Brian Garrett was hired as principal for Sandy Valley High School.

-4-H members named to the 2009 Outstanding Court were:  Melinda Weaver, Sally Schmachtenberger, Heather Evanich, Tyler Moore, Alana Moncman, Melissa Evanich and Jill Borland.

-Several local football players were selected to participate in the annual Times-Reporter Charities All-Star Football Game.  East team members chosen were:  Ben Bryan, Sam Hamilton, Austin Kirk, Shiloh Neice and Dylan Peoples, all of Carrollton; Josh Boon, Sandy Valley; Cody Booth and Austin Caswell, Conotton Valley; Andrew Gascon, Vince Larson, Brady Sickles, Tyler Tucci and John Warner, all of Malvern.  Malvern head coach Dave Tucci coached the East team.

-Brittanie Logan was crowned the 2009 Beef Queen at the Carroll County Fair by Samantha Grubbs, 2008 queen.

AUGUST:
-Dr. Keith Burgett, owner of Carrollton Animal Hospital donated a Home Again Universal World scanner to the Carroll County Dog Pound.  The scanner is used to scan for chips implanted under a dog’s skin to identify the owner.

-Washington Twp. Trustees voted to purchase the Carroll County Vet’s Pool from the Carrollton Board of Education for $1.  Plans are for the trustees to transfer ownership to the Vet’s Club once they obtain non-profit status.

-The Carroll County Animal Protection League purchased 5.393 acres of land in Harrison Twp. along Canton Rd.  The ground will be used to build and maintain an animal shelter for domestic animals.

-2009 inductees to the Carrollton High School Athletic Hall of Fame included:  the late Earl Abel, Marvin Bright, Alan Miller, Kathie Frase, Craig Winters, Tom Birong and the 1976 Cross Country team.

-Former Carrollton resident and jockey, Eddie Maple was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY.

SEPTEMBER:
-Cody Babe and Randal Rapp, seniors at Buckeye Career Center, are enrolled in the new Outdoor Power Equipment Technology program initiated this year.  The program has 17 students enrolled.

-The court battle over the auction of the Carroll County Veteran’s Memorial Pool was dismissed and  the pool transfered to Washington Twp. Trustees.

-Members of the Carrollton High School girl’s golf team competed in their inaugural match, a quad-angular against Minerva, New Philadelphia and Garaway.

-Kelsey Cogan defended her cross country title at the 38th annual Dover Invitation with a time of 19:23.

OCTOBER:
-Minerva council approved an ordinance allowing golf carts to be driven on city streets.  Carts must  be licensed by the state and have all safety equipment required of other on-road vehicles.

-Carrollton, Malvern and Minerva football teams remained undefeated during the fifth week of the season.

-The Carrollton Ruritan Club provided dictionaries to Carrollton and Augusta third grade students for the sixth consecutive year.

-Six people were inducted into the Minerva High School Athletic Hall of Fame.  They included:  Tony Mazaferro, Chris Hahn, John Williams IV, Keith Cogan, Trudy Norman and David Dourm.

-Linda “Alicia” Hall was named new director of educational services at Carroll Hills School after Tammy Maney left for another position.

-Sabrinia Eick, a 2007 graduate of Carrollton High School and a student at OSU Agricultural Technical Institute, placed first at the 2009 World Dairy Expo held in Madison, WI.

-Alexis Kunkel was crowned 2009 homecoming queen at Edison High School during halftime festivities of the Edison-Union Local football game. 

-Carrollton Warrior boys soccer team coasted to a 4-1 victory over Indian Creek.  Next the Warriors tackle the Minerva Lions.  The winner will win the sectional title.

NOVEMBER:
-Kenneth L. Grigsby of Dellroy became the newest commissioner on the Board of the Carroll County Parks District.  His three-year term began immediately with his swearing in by Carroll County Probate Judge John Campbell.

-The Carrollton Warrior boys soccer team beat Minerva 5-4 in overtime to win their first ever Sectional championship.

-Sally Davies, owner of Davies Hair Design, celebrated 25 years in the beauty business.

-Chelsea McIntire and Gage Spears, both seniors at Carrollton High School, participated in the Eastern District Soccer Coaches Assn. All Star Game Nov. 8 at Dover.  Along with McIntire, other members of the girls’ East team included Marta Fiala and Kayla Brown, Edison; and Amanda Brothers, Minerva.  Joining Spears on the East boys’ team was James Mullins and Chris Haught, Edison; and Craig Smith and Aaron Burman, Minerva.  Both East teams were victorious.

-Cheryl Mickley and son Lewis donated a laptop and Dale Hinerman donated a handmade covered wagon to the Carroll County Parks Board at their November meeting.

-Amy Rutledge, director of the Carroll County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, was installed by Governor Ted Strickland as president of the Ohio Association of Convention and Visitor’s Bureaus.

DECEMBER:
-Frank Truman of the Golden Age Retreat was honored for 75-years as a member of the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry.

-Buckeye Career Center received national recognition when it was awarded a High Schools That Work (HSTW) Gold Award for Improved Implementation in 2009.  BCC was one of only 10 high schools in the nation to earn the award.
-Nancy Wheaton of Carrollton was named “Woman of the Year” by Carrollton Business Women. 

Seeion for 2010.
-The Carroll County Visiting Nurse Association was named to the 2009 HomeCare Elite, a compilation of top performing home health agencies in the United States.

-Carrie Meenan, a 6th grade student at Malvern Middle School, was named Carroll County winner in the 4th annual Child of Appalachia essay contest.  She is the daughter of Dan and Mona Meenan of Bronze Rd., Carrollton.
-Margaret Mesler, a 20-year member of the Carrollton Village Fire Department was named “Firefighter of the Year.”
