The Carrollton Music Study Club held its September Membership Tea and awarded two “Musician of the Year” honors.

Helen Maffett, a long-time Carrollton resident and music club member, was one of the honorees.  Maffett was born in Covington, KY, and graduated from Holms High School in 1954.  While in high school, she sang in the choir and played base clarinet in the band.

She married Dr. Jack Maffett June 17, 1956.  They have three sons, Mike of Bergholz, Tom of Lake Mohawk and Jon of Columbus; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  She graduated from Christ Hospital School of Nursing in 1956 and received her nursing license in 1957.

Dr. Jack opened his office in 1960 with Helen as nurse, bookkeeper, accountant and typist.  She took care of reports, completed insurance forms and worked as his lab technician.

She founded the Carroll County Nursing Association and co-founded the Maffett Clan Society of North America, now an international organization.

Maffett joined Carrollton Music Study Club in the early 1970s, served as vice president for 12 years and other offices and supported the musicians and scholarship programs.

She sang in the choir at Latonia Baptist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Martin Lutheran Church.  She played piano and organ at Carrollton and Kilgore Lutheran churches.

Helen was director of the adult and children’s Christmas plays at Trinity Lutheran Church, taught adult and youth Sunday school classes and coached her  sons in their music endeavors, Mike, singer; Tom, singer in church choir, and Jon, bag pipes.  She was a member of the Carroll Tones and a den mother for Boy Scouts.

Her hobbies include horseback riding, fishing, boating, reading, traveling, cooking, playing the piano and organ and gardening.

The music club also recognized Pastor Mike Doak and his wife Roberta for their support and help with club activities.  Club meetings, community events and the annual Vesper service in December are held at Church of Christ (Christian Disciples) on Moody Ave., Carrollton, where Doak is the pastor.

The Doak family moved from Washington D.C. to Carrollton in the fall of 2003.  Pastor Doak and Roberta have two children, Ben, a sophomore at the University of Akron and Carrie, a sophomore at Grove City College, majoring in Music  Education.

They are generous contributors to the music club scholarship fund, attend club events and often take part in the programs.  Pastor Doak has instrumental and vocal talents and often attends club meetings.  He has been overheard saying, “I like to mosey in to see the club because they have cookies.”

Roberta is employed at the Carroll County Library.

Rose Seck, chairman of the award committee stated, “We can not thank the Doaks enough for promoting our efforts and encouraging our youth.”
