Several Carroll County youth took top honors at the recent Ohio State Fair with awards from the 4-H junior fair livestock and non-livestock and senior fair livestock shows.
Following are the results submitted to the FPS for publication.
JR. FAIR HORSE
Marissa Geib, 17, daughter of Rose Geib of Waynesburg placed third in western showmanship with her horse Spirited Sno Ball. Geib is a member of Ridge Riders 4-H Club.
4-H STILL PROJECTS
Tyler Moore and Melinda Weaver both were presented with clock trophies for their efforts at the state fair.
Moore, 16, son of Kim and Sam Moore of near Kilgore received the clock trophy in Small Engines III, Tune It Up. Moore has competed at the state fair level for small engines in past years. Moore made a display poster of two and four-cycle engines. During judging, he removed the pieces from the poster and assembled the engine for the judge, explaining how the parts worked as he assembled them.
Moore is a member of Kilgore Rangers 4-H Club.
Weaver, 16, daughter of Janet and Larry Weaver of Mechanicstown was awarded the clock trophy for Woodworking I, Measuring Up. Sibling rivalry was how Weaver ended up taking a woodworking project. Brother, Wilbur, told Melinda she couldn’t get to state with woodworking. She also competed in Veterinary Science II, receiving an outstanding of the day and in Exploring our Forests and You’re the Chef. Wilbur competed in the engineering day, tractor class.
Weaver is a member of Kangaroo Krew 4-H Club.
DOG
The Gibson sisters took several top honors in the dog competition this year. Codie, 18, and Kylie, 15, are the daughters of Robert and Laura Gibson of Ming Rd., Carrollton. Codie placed first in Graduate Open A with her Australian Shepherd, BJ. Kylie placed first in Graduate Novice A with her Sheltie, Sheila; first in Open A with Sheltie, Possum; and first in Brace, an obedience team using both dogs. Kylie also received her third year championship title and the Ohio State Fair Versatility Award.
The Gibsons are members of Snoopy’s Friends 4-H Club.
SHEEP
The Walter Johnson family of Pattersonville competed in the junior show and open show with the Oxford lambs and received honors in both divisions.
Leann, 19, and Travis, 11, received seven first place class wins, five second places, Champion Ram, Reserve Champion Ram, Champion Ewe, Reserve Champion Ewe, and Supreme Champion Ram.
Leann placed second and Travis fourth in their showmanship classes.
During the open show, the family won Champion Ram.
Leann is a member of Carrollton FFA and Travis is a member of The Beef Club.
JR. BEEF
Kady and Garett Davis, daughter and son of Todd and Kim Davis of Petersburg walked away with several awards during the junior beef show.
Kady, 9, placed first in showmanship and skillathon for her age group. She won Reserve Champion Beef Performance and Carcus Quality (BPCQ), placed third with her market heifer and was named nine year old “Outstanding Market Exhibitor.”
Garett, 12, placed first in showmanship and second in skillathon for his age group. He placed second with his market heifer and was named the 12 year old “Outstanding Market Exhibitor.”
Kady and Garett competed against each other and the winners of the other age brackets for the title of the “Overall Winner of Outstanding Market Exhibitors.” Kady, proving that those who work harder, was named the winner. She received a check for $2,500 from the Youth Reserve Program, a director’s chair and a belt buckle. Garett also received a belt buckle for being in the Sale of Champions.
The Davis’ are members of Petersburg Livestock 4-H Club and show Maine-Anjou crossbreeds.
Victoria Trbovich, daughter of Okey and Julie Trbovich of Waynesburg, placed first in Junior Maine-Anjou Heifer Calf and in Maine-Tainer junior calf. She won the 14 year old showmanship class, had the Division 4 Reserve Champion in the market beef division and tied for “Outstanding Market Exhibitor” in her age bracket. Victoria competed in a tie-breaker with Jordan Mullett. Mullett won the tie breaker and placed third overall in “Outstanding Market Exhibitor.”
Trbovich has had an outstanding year winning in contests in Kentucky, Colorado and Kansas City.
Julie Trbovich said, “Carroll County has really good representation in the ‘Outstanding Market Exhibitor.’ Out of 10 children competing, three were from Carroll County.” Julie was quick to say Victoria did well on the skillathon portion thanks to the help she received from Kim Davis. “Skillathon is Kim’s area of expertise,” said Julie.
Victoria is a member of the Young Hearts and Stars 4-H club.
Alivia Trbovich, 17, daughter of Dan and Nancy Trbovich of Waynesburg competed in junior beef classes at the Ohio State Fair. She placed second in showmanship for her age group and second in the market class for any other breed.
Alivia is a member of the Farmers, Critters and Fitters 4-H club.
Other county 4-H members receiving outstandings at state fair include: Mycala Nichols, Woodworking and Creative Arts, Measuring Up; Dalton Ulman, Fishing for the Beginner; Rebecca Grunder, Shooting Sports, Rifle, junior and Casey Haney, The Global Gourmet.
Wes Jones placed second in Utility A in the junior dog show with his black Labrador, Jewell.
The 2008 Ohio State Fair ran July 30 through Aug. 10. Youth who took still projects to the state fair qualified by participating in one of the project juding days at the county level and earned outstanding and state fair. Youth who took animal projects to the state fair did not have to qualify at the county level, with the exception of horses. Horse participants compete in a Points Against Standard program.

The 2009 Ohio State Fair will run July 29 through Aug. 9 at the Ohio Expo Center on E. 17th Ave. in Columbus. |
