Perry Twp. VFD to celebrate 50th anniversary

Perry Twp. fire departmentThe Perry Twp. Volunteer Fire Department is holding an open house celebration Aug. 12 from 1- 5 p.m. at the fire station.

In honor of the department’s 50th anniversary, Chief Peggy Horn and the volunteers will serve homemade ice cream and cake during the celebration. 

The department was formed in 1962 and charter members include:  Keith Henry, Gib Burton, Jerry Leggett, Keith Johnston, Bill Lairson, Wade McKinney, Don Oehlstrom, Jim Moore, Sr., Ira Palmer, Red Miller, Roy Logan, Al Logan, David Henry, George Palmer, Bud Copeland and Jim Mills, Sr.

According to the Nov. 1, 1962, issue of The FPS, Secretary of State Ted W. Brown issued a non-profit charter to Perry Twp. VFD, Inc. and residents of Perry Twp. would vote on a one mill levy for a period of five years for the purpose of fire protection.  The levy passed 135-66.

Roy Logan was president of the department and Gilbert Burton was chief.
