FPS staff report

Worm race winners
WORM OFF WINNERS. The three finalists in the “Big Worm Off” are shown in the above photo. Winner Khalen Green is in front. Standing behind (from left) is Olivia Lindenbaum, Marcia Schaffer, Keaza Green holding her brother’s trophy, and Aliyah Jenkins.
Lindenbaum is the daughter of Megan and Jeremy Lindenbaum of Lake Mohawk. Khalen and Keaza are the children of Krissy and Brandon Green of Carrollton. Jenkins is the daughter of Larry and Jamie Jenkins of Augusta.

The summer reading program is in full swing at the Carroll County District Library.

The annual “Big Worm Off” worm race was held Friday morning in the Bookmobile garage.  A total of 17 worms earned the honor to compete in the “Big Worm Off.”

Two heats were held and three finalists went to the finale.  The no name worm of Aliyah Jenkins, 6, was the first heat crossing the finish line in 37 seconds.  Khalen Green, 2, racing “Elmo” and Olivia Lindenbaum, 5, with “Chocolate” tied when their worms both reached the finish line in 39 seconds.  Elmo was able to pull ahead to be named the winner of the 2009 Big Worm Off.

Children’s librarian Marcia Schaffer said, “We had 107 participants in the worm races trials.  That is a large number.  We have a total of 358 signed up for the summer reading program and kids still signing up everyday.”  Schaffer stated the total number of children participating in the crafts so far is over 2,000.

The theme of the summer reading program is “Get Creative at your Library” and runs through July 31.

With four different age groups, the library has something to offer everyone.  Children ages 0-3 are doodle bugs; pre-school through second grade, etch-a-sketchers; third to fifth grade, easel weasels; and ages 6th grade and older, starving artists.  A schedule of craft and story times is available at the library.  Some crafts are age oriented while others are open to all ages.

Activities scheduled for July include potato bowling, movie night, family theater, bingo and the “funny, freaky, high-flying finale” at 1 p.m. July 31.

Adults have the opportunity to participate in a summer reading program.  A paper beading class will be held July 13 and card making with Milissa Yockey and Dolly Moore is set for July 28.  Both classes are from 6-8 p.m.   With a limit of 20 people, all those wanting to participate must register.

The Carroll County District Library, located at 70 Second St., NE, Carrollton, can be reached at 330-627-2613.  Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
